Serious about Music

Mark 'Tomo,' Thompson-tomothedrummer is a pro drummer and percussionist. Session player and teacher.

I have been playing drums since 1985. Like many musicians, I have gained much of my experience through playing with and supporting various bands, as well as playing session. I knew I'd want to stay with drums for the rest of my life, playing and teaching, so I put in for my Grade 8 Drum Kit exam with RSL. After developing a style all of my own over the years, I just about got through the exam!

After playing for over 30 years I am now am a session player, teacher, coach and percussion practitioner. Working with young people and in the community is at the heart of everything I do, as music has given me so much in terms of confidence and expression, and I want young people now to discover the same for themselves.

I have been fortunate enough to work with some very inspiring individuals. Meeting the legendary Anika Nilles and classic session player Geoff Dugmore at the London Drum Show has been one of many key moments. I am inpired by Benny Greb, Stuart Copeland, Aaron Spears and Eric Harland to name a few.

Currently working as a professional Session drummer and DJ and Drum Teacher

Personal Statement

I have a special interest in the amalgamation of percussion and electronic music, both in composition for commercial projects and for the benefit the community around me. This ‘hybrid,’ approach is at the heart of the modern music industry at present, and an approach that excites me.  I am currently teaching Drums up to Grade 8 and delivering Electronic, DJ, percussion and hybrid Music Workshops.

One of main focuses at present is a development of a workshop named ‘Music Madness,’ which aims to use music as a tool to deal with some of the challenges associated with mental health and wellbeing.
